Pros
- Excelleng GUI with embedded browser to detect videos
- Fast, multi-threaded downloading of videos
- Support for a wide variety of protocols, including HTTP and some RTMP (previously also RTMPE)
Cons
- Is not maintained anymore
- No longer supports the most popular websites, such as Hulu and NetFlix
- Is mostly useless now except for smaller websites with minimal content downloading protections
StreamTransport is a utility that downloads videos from sources that are traditionally "non-downloadable" (such as Hulu). It relies on RTMPDump but is generally unreliable and has not been updated for the most popular websites.
StreamTransport is generally sought after to download videos from premium sites for offline viewing. While many providers have begun to offer DRM-protected downloads of their content independently, this outputs videos in an unprotected format that can be converted to anything and played on any device. Unfortunately, the developers of StreamTransport stopped updating it in 2014. It is still useful for unprotected sources that stream over HTTP and even some that stream over RTMP but have not been updated.
To be clear, you should not expect to be able to grab videos from Hulu or Netflix like this. However, smaller websites that cannot afford RTMPE protection on their content may still be downloadable with StreamTransport. There are many old compatibility lists online, but unfortunately these are outdated. You're likely better off finding a downloader for the specific website you're interested in rather than try to use this as a one size fits all solution.
Finally, StreamTransport was once a phenomenal piece of free software. However, once it ceased development, it quickly became fairly useless. You should look elsewhere for a free downloading tool at this point (unless developers resume work on it).
